How to Submit
There are two ways of submitting - manual submission and automative submission . Both are very essential.
You should choose manual submissions to indexes . Major indexes such as DMoz and Yahoo require manual submission and take a very long time to get into. Be patient! It is really worth it. There are other indexes that you should go to as well. It is worth the wait getting into major indexes becasue a lot of serach engines will take the listings up and it will thus increase proliferation, which in busines terms means greater exposure.
First make sure your page is properly optimized as described above. Make sure you do not submit duplicate pages also. Then go through the directory and choose catergories that are relevant to you. Continue upwards until you reach the most suitable catergory. Try to ensure that the catergory you have chosen is final destination you can go to and also try to ensure that it is a fitting description of what you offer. Try to ensure that the catergory you choose to register under is well populated and that there is not only one or two sites there.
It will take quite a long time to get listed and, placement on the directories and there is absolutely no assurance that you will get listed at all. If your site is unique and fits the suggestions as specified above it is more likely to be accepted. Affiliate sites do not get registered at all because they are duplicates of the promoter sites. So you a need your own website to promote affilate programs. As mentioned earlier you can choose freewebs.com if you want a free webpage. If you don't mind paying, I recommend ipowerweb.
When you compare free with paid, it is quite obvious you get a lot more if you pay. But that's enough about web hosting. I mentioned them before and therefore would like to get back to point.
Getting listed in as many directories as possible is very important because search engines will start to take them up. Google feeds over 120 search engines and Yahoo is not far behind.
You can register with Yahoo and DMoz for free, but Yahoo also has a paid service. Dmoz takes about a year to get into and perhaps upto another year for search engines to take them up but it is well worth the wait because your webpages will be well proliferated.
You can list your self with most search engines manually in the method as stipulated above, but it will take hours of hard work and losing patience. What is worse is that search engines usually ask you to submit only the first or index page of your site. If you have taken the trouble to create different keywords, descriptions and titles for each of your pages, the last thing you want is to be held back.
This is where automative submission comes in. There are many free search engine submission services available on the net that will submit your pages for free, but these are usually limited to a small number of search engines which does not really help if you want to increase your exposure. Further many of them reduce the number of keywords you can use, to as much as quarter and this ofcourse reduces your chances of ranking. Nevertheless I have ranked on the no1 spot in Yahoo, Google, MSN etc for a large number of keywords for different sites using FREE submissions, but when we are playing a numbers game, hoping for sign ups of your affiliate programs and as the conversion rate is only between 5% to 25% it is very impotant to get the maximum exposure.
Therefore I do not really recommend any free submissions at all unless you simply cannot affordable it or unless you are skeptical of your affilate program and just do not want to spend.
