History of Bara Katra

It is a dilapidated Mughal-era structure. It is one of the oldest buildings in Dhaka. At present, the remnants of the original structure are existent. The building is used as storerooms. There is a small prayer room on the top of the building. It was the residence of the Shah Shuja. He was the second son of Emperor Shah Jahan. The word Katara has come from Arabic word Katara. The meaning of the word katara is colonnaded building. There are 22 rooms and two gateways in the building. There is intricate plasterwork in the underside of the building. The structure has  tall octagonal towers in each corner. The architecture is very important. It represents the Mughal establishments in this region.

How to Go to Bara Katra

To go to Bara Katra, you will have to reach Chowk-bazar at first. It is 17.6 kilometers away from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. It may take about 40 minutes to reach the site without any traffic. The place is 4.4 kilometers away from Saidabad bus station. It may take 16 minutes to reach the site from Saidabad. The distance of the site is 10.5 kilometers from Gabtoli bus terminal. It is a distance of about 40 minutes.

There are many reputed hotels where you can both stay and have foods. You will get both local and exotic foods. Ruposhi Bangla Hotel and Sonargaon Pan Pacific Hotel are two reputed hotels nearby.

The site is at Chowkbazar of Dhaka in Bangladesh. It remains open for the visitors from 8 am to 5 pm. The visitors can visit the site for free. There is no parking facility in the area.
