About Mirpur Zoo Dhaka

The Mirpur Zoo Dhaka is home to more than 2,000 animals from 165 species. It operates under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. The zoo began its journey at the High Court premises in Dhaka in 1964, then moved to its present location in 1974, and has been developed and improved over the years.

About 4 million visitors come to Dhaka Zoo every year. The place is a favorite for children. It has a calm atmosphere. The zoo covers 75.53 hectares of land. There are two lakes inside: South Lake (7.29 hectares) and North Lake (5.67 hectares).

The Museum is an important addition to Dhaka Zoo. It is a two-storied building at the southwest corner, housing a fish aquarium, library, and lecture theatre. Various rare animals and birds are preserved through stuffing and in jars. The museum supports recreation, learning, and research.

The main attraction of the zoo is the Royal Bengal Tigers from the Sundarbans. It has a rich collection of animals, birds, and wildlife of both local and foreign origin. The zoo houses over 2,150 vertebrates belonging to 191 species. Visitors can see animals like elephants, cheetahs, rhinoceros, zebras, waterbucks, otters, hyenas, deer, giraffes, impalas, black bears, tapirs, hippos, lions, and many different species of monkeys, as well as chimpanzees and baboons.

For lost children or property, visitors should contact the zoo's information center.

There are five other zoos in the towns of Rangpur, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Comilla, and Khulna.
